about

To compose this track I used the 12 harmonies present in the circle of fifths and put them in an envelope. I used a second envelope in which I put four even numbers (the first four substantial numbers of the two times table, not including zero.) First of all I blindly drew a number from the envelope containing the even numbers, this turned out to be the number four. The instruction then was to draw four fifth harmonies from an envelope containing the 12 chords taken from the circle of fifths. I selected four chords from the second envelope and wrote these down. The next step was to compose a track using only these four chord choices.

Since my earliest band 'The Clock Surgeons' I have been interested in drones of perfect fifth intervals without fully realising there relevance in eastern philosophy. With my first group 'The Clock Surgeons' I drew up a score for a track which used the circle of fifths with some gentle glissandi guitar and birdsong for a first performance at a village hall (which we never played). The idea became the basis for 'Island' from my third instrumental solo album 'Invisible Ocean, Floating Island (pts.1-3)' some ten years later :

'Reflections' I hope helps you to find some balance and peace of mind in life. Whether balance and peace of mind can be found via music composed using elements of chaos and chance is up to your personal interpretation of these sounds. The choice of a title was influenced having read the five reflections of the buddha, intrinsic to the buddhist faith. This was related to the fifth interval being very important to buddhist meditation practices.
